Wine Corks To Corkboard

Hello there =)  Feeling crafty?  Drink a lot of wine? Good, I found a fun one for you.  It’s simple , cleans up some of the evidence that you’ve downed a few bottles of vino and provides a place to make a note that you need more wine.

Join me as we go from wine cork to cork board!

Let’s gather our supplies and get working

Wine corks.  Go ahead open a bottle of Cabernet or Riesling and add the cork to the pile.  You might need an extra.

Adhesives and Wax Paper. I started with 2 (tacky glue and hot glue) because I couldn’t decide which one to use. Long story short, hot glue was way faster, but there’s probably something that works better than both tacky and hot glue strength wise.  Don’t forget to protect your working surface.  Especially if it’s a beautiful table that you probably shouldn’t be crafting on…

Cutting board/mat and knife.  A serrated knife works best and I preferred to make my cuts on the cutting board over the craft mat.  Cut your corks into even pieces.  I got five or six pieces from each cork.  It’ll take a few corks to get the hang of making even cuts, but we’re cool you added a couple when you started ;)

Look at all that cork!  I’m going to be perfectly honest, I have no idea how many corks my end result used.  I just kept cutting and cutting.  I didn’t get a hang of the even piece cutting until the end.  I had quite a few pieces that were very angular.

Start gluing your cork pieces together.  I started at one end with tacky glue and the other with hot glue.  Tacky glue was super easy to control when applying.  I also could take more time when placing the pieces together.  But… it took forever to dry, like until the next day.

Hot glue allowed for me to be able to pick up my creation immediately but required quick hands when assembling and some burned fingers.  Hot glue did make the pieces feel more secure in the end.

The small pieces of cork let you be as creative or basic as you want to be when you’re assembling your new cork board.  Someone had to drink like a fish to get all these corks, so I ran (or swam) with that =)  I love his purple eye.

I didn’t know how I am going to put this up on my work station, so I just rested it on some hooks for now.

These would make perfect DIY gifts for the holiday season.  You could make trivets too, but be sure to find heat safe adhesive.

What shape will your cork board be?

Helpful Hints For Next Time:

  • Find a stronger adhesive. OR, add a backing of felt and stick with the hot glue.
  • Glue from one end to the other vs creating an outline and working towards the center.

  1. I’ve seen many wine cork projects, but I love how creative you are with this one! It would have never occurred to me to cut them and make a custom shape! Very cool idea!

  2. This is so cute! I’ve seen many crafts using wine corks, but never one making an actual corkboard. So cute! Lord knows I’ve got tons of wine corks (and a few more waiting to be taken out of their bottles) lying around.
